Neighborhood Ministry News For July 2012
Last month was Vacation Bible School and one of the main themes we had throughout the week was a God Sighting. We described this to the children as a time when you see God at work in and amongst your surroundings. (home, neighborhood, church, school, people, nature etc.) We gave examples to the kids and then asked them to come up with their own. Here are a few ways the children saw God: I was just adopted by my new family!, I saw God in a rabbit, I saw the beautiful sunset and thought of God, when my friend helped me with a problem, and of course my favorite they saw God at VBS!
I must admit that I saw God too. We often think that VBS is just for the kids but everyone grows during VBS week… for I saw God challenge an adult… you see someone called in sick and the person who was back up wasn’t quite ready to take the lead. However, after prayer with a fellow teacher this person loved what they did and is ready to do it again next year! I saw God work through the youth leaders as they became more confident each day and helped lead the campers in prayer. I saw God work as families read emails and letters that had been sent and they could see how God was working in our lives as well as their children’s.
There was another God sighting as the principal from Apache visited the VBS campers and thanked them for the money that was raised for the Desert Garden. Heide Cane is very dedicated to building community that will benefit the children and families of the Peace neighborhood. We were also able to send a flyer through Apache ES about our VBS which had never been allowed before. Of course that is another God sighting!
So what is next? How do we build on what happened during VBS in our neighborhoods? Well, why not start by God sightings? Why not take a look at what is going on around where you live and take some time to pray and look for God at work and then hop aboard!
