A Blessing to use during Lent

Lent, the season before Easter, often asks us to think of our spiritual habits and we are often encouraged to adopt a discipline or habit during this season. This year I am giving everyone an idea that they might like to use in their homes. I have a blessing below that that could be done each night during Lent or as many nights as possible. To best prepare for this blessing it is important to set a tone of quiet mystery, so dim the lights and turnoff the phone and TV. Remember to invite, never coerce, family members to be part of this blessing. If possible place a purple cloth on a table and on it six purple candles one for each week of Lent. Also, be sure to set out a Bible.

Blessing for Lent:

Say all together: For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.

Prayer: Just an example you may say whatever prayer you might like. Father God, we all need time during our busy lives to stop and pause and think of you. Whether we see your fingerprints in the sunset or we feel your presence through others. Lord, help us to keep our eyes, our hearts, our minds open to ‘you during this season. In Jesus’ name amen.

Use our Peace Lenten Devotional Book for the day it is and you will have a Bible passage. Then either share or write in a journal about these questions…

Why do you think Jesus did this or told this story?

What can I learn from this Bible passage?

How does this Bible passage help me grow as a Christian?

Time for silent reflection as you look at the candles

Closing Prayer: Prayer concerns for friends and family or end with the Lord’s Prayer

Practicing faith in our homes allows us to bring our faith into our daily lives. Do you know someone who might enjoy practicing these habits over Lent? Why not try it yourself and then pass it onto someone who might like to try the same thing?

Sharing our faith practices at home show others that home is church too.

Neighborhood Ministry ...

is about serving, inviting and caring for others according to each neighborhood’s needs.

It is a ministry that allows for each neighborhood to have its own personality.

This ministry is also about neighborhoods becoming aware of the opportunities God is giving them in the place where they live and acting upon those opportunities.

Bottom Line: It is about demonstrating Hospitality to our Peace neighbors, and inviting those who aren’t a part of our faith community to see God in action through us!
